The Easter message of the Heads of Churches of Jerusalem PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 April 2014 15:29
altWe, the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, bring joyous greetings in the name of our risen Lord from the city of the Resurrection. It is from the heart of this city that the first Easter proclamation was made. Christ is risen from the dead! It was also from the heights of Jerusalem that Jesus commissioned his disciples to take this good news as far as the very ends of the earth. Here in the Holy City it is our tradition, our privilege and our call to share the good news about our risen Lord with the whole human family and especially with those who are living under oppression, violence, displacement, occupation, injustice or other kinds of human suffering. We pray that the power of the Resurrection may prevail in the midst of all human agonies and that the light which shines from the Empty Tomb may inspire endurance, perseverance and hope that victory will eventually come, so that all people may enjoy the fullness of life of which the Resurrection is itself the foretaste and promise.

Easter Greetings from HCEF President/CEO Sir Rateb Rabie, KCHS PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 April 2014 17:47

On behalf of the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) and the Holy Land Christians, I send you joyful Easter greetings. As we approach Easter, we remember that it is truly the day that Christianity was born, for it was through his passion and resurrection that Jesus opened wide the gates of heaven, offering salvation to the human race so desperate to be freed from sin, fear, injustice and sorrow.  All of Jesus' life, ministry, wisdom and miracles would have been forgotten now, had His glorious resurrection not transformed the world and our lives! The opportunity to share in some part of Christ's selfless suffering, and to indeed relive this turning point in the history of mankind, is a great blessing. It is therefore with humble, hopeful joy that I look forward to Easter Sunday!

Tuesday, 15 April 2014 07:25

altMaalula - After the reconquest of the Christian village of Maalula - 55 km northeast of Damascus - by the Syrian government army, the images and descriptions released by government sources and international news agencies also document the devastation committed against Christian places of worship during the four months in which the city was under the occupation of the rebel militias. In particular, serious damages were carried out against the Greek-Melkite shrine of Mar Sarkis, where the church is destroyed, the floor is covered with religious objects, images and sacred books are damaged, the icons kept in the sacristy are missing and there are no bells or the cross surmounting the dome of the Greek-Melkite monastery. The sanctuary, founded at the end of the fifth century, is dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus, Roman soldiers martyred for their faith under the Emperor Galerius. (A.D. 250-311).

altDamascus  - The Syrian army loyal to President Assad have retaken control of the town of Maalula, 50 kilometers from Damascus. The news comes from Syrian security sources, according to which the army is gaining ground across the disputed region of Qalamun. The town of Maalula, where the monastery of Santa Tecla and the sanctuary dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus are situtated, had been in the hands of rebel militias for about four months. Among the formations that had attacked the city there was also the jihadis militia of Jabhat al-Nusra Front. On 3 December last year 13 Greek-Orthodox nuns of the monastery of Santa Tecla had been kidnapped along with other three people.
