A Syriac Catholic monk and a church volunteer were abducted by masked militants from a monastery in Homs province on Friday, May 22.
Fr. Jack Murad and Boutros Hanna, a church volunteer, were taken from the Mar Elian Monastery in Al Qaryatayn at mid-day on Friday, May 22.

A statement was issued by Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III Younan, patriarch of Antioch and all the East of the Syrians for the Syriac Catholic Church in this regard. It stated: “With great sadness and pain, we received the news of the kidnapping of Fr. Jack Murad.”

Priest Jacques Murad, Prior of the Monastery of Mar Elian, was abducted by two kidnappers at the Monastery under the threat of arms. According to some local sources, contacted by Agenzia Fides, the seizure most probably took place on Monday, May 18, while other sources claim that the priest was kidnapped on Thursday May, 21. The news was confirmed today by the Syrian Catholic Archdiocese of Homs, that asked all the faithful to invoke the Lord in prayer so that father Jacques is released and can return to his life of prayer, to serve his brothers and all Syrians.

On Sunday, May 17 His Holiness Pope Francis canonized two Palestinian nuns from the 19th-century, Miriam Bawardy, a sister of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, and Marie Alphonsine Ghattas, a co-founder of Jerusalem's Rosary Sisters. They are now known as St. Mary of Jesus Crucified and St. Marie-Alphonsine.

This is the message that Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Tawadros II wanted to launch on Thursday, May 21 during the first Conference which he convened to address all issues related to the development of the Coptic community in diaspora.
The program of the conference - held in the Monastery of St. Paul the Hermit, not far from the Red Sea - intends to outline some guidelines for the development of Coptic communities around the world for the next 25 years. In his speech, Pope Tawadros stressed the need to work so that the canonical and ecclesiastical structures are always placed at the service of the dynamics at work in the ecclesial life, wherever it is present.

Four young Coptic Christians in the province of Minya, Upper Egypt, were kidnapped along the country road they were walking to reach the ancient church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the village of Jabal al-Tair, in the city of Salamut. This was reported by Egyptian sources consulted by Agenzia Fides. 

As reported by "Coptstoday" website, the families of the kidnapped young Christians have been contacted by the kidnappers who have demanded a ransom of 600 thousand Egyptian pounds (almost 70 thousand euro) for their release. There was even a 5-year-old among the four kidnapped, aged between 20 and 35 years of age at the time of the kidnapping, who was later released.

The Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil Elaraby welcomed "the Vatican recognition of the Palestinian state", national entity whose words will be explicitly mentioned in the global Agreement between the Holy See and Palestine in the process of being signed in the near future.

Elaraby expressed conviction that the step announced will help to promote the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, beginning with the right to have an independent state "with East Jerusalem as its capital". This is the content of a statement issued yesterday by the international organization based in Cairo, sent to Agenzia Fides. Elaraby has also expressed the hope that other States and governments will soon follow the example of the Vatican, in turn recognizing the State of Palestine.
