The Syrian Parliament Commemorates the Armenian Genocide PDF Print E-mail

On Wednesday 4 March, the Syrian People's Assembly dedicated a session commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The initiative, promoted in particular by the Syrian Christian Parliamentary Maria Saadeh, saw the involvement of members of the Parliamentary Committees on Foreign Relations. Before the parliamentary session, the President of Parliament, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia in Syria, Arshak Poladyan, together with the Armenian Apostolic Bishop Armash Nalbandian, members of the Armenian Catholic community and representatives in charge of coordinating the events which in Syria will be dedicated to the centenary of the massacres of Armenians committed in the Anatolian peninsula 100 years ago.

The Bethlehem Museum façade, its doors finally opened to visitors after this 30-year-long vision came to life

After 30 years of patient determination, the Bethlehem Museum for History, Heritage and Culture finally opened on February 28, 2015. The Arab Women’s Union of Bethlehem (AWU) initiated the Museum in 1977, but it was held from completion due to a variety of obstacles. The Holy Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) saw the Museum’s potential and knew it fit perfectly with the organization’s mission. In 2012 HCEF partnered with AWU to bring the Bethlehem Museum to life.

The number of Christians in the villages of the valley of Khabur captured by the jihadists of the Islamic State (IS) in the northeastern Syrian province of Jazira increases. According to updates by Archbishop Jacques Behnan Hindo, ordinary of the Syrian Catholic Archieparchy in Hassaké-Nisibis, more than 250 Assyrian and Chaldean inhabitants of the villages appear to be in the hands of the jihadists, and were deported by them towards their strongholds in the Sheddadi area, 40 km south of Hassaké.

In the early hours of today, Thursday 26 February, an arson attack damaged the Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate's Theological Seminary of Jerusalem, not far from the Old Town. The fire devastated a hall of the seminar and some annexes. The unknown attackers also wrote blasphemous sentences against Christ on the walls, written in Hebrew.

Islamic State Burns Down 4 Syrian Churches PDF Print E-mail

While kidnapping residents from Christian villages in northeastern Syria, militants from the Islamic State burned down at least four Christian churches, according to the Assyrian International News Agency. The number of hostages taken from the Christian villages may be as high as 150, rather than the 90-100 originally reported, the AsiaNews service says. There are numerous unconfirmed reports that some hostages have been killed, some rapes committed, and "blood everywhere."
