• Unique Summer Camp in the Holy Land

The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation announces that it will fund a unique ecumenical coeducational summer camp for 250 children ages 10 yrs. – 14 yrs. in the West Bank’s Bethlehem district. Children from 12 Christian church groups from Bethlehem, Beit Jala and Beit Sahour will participate in the program during the first week of July 2003. There are 10 cultural events scheduled to encourage social, civic, and environmental responsibility. In addition, sports and other recreational activities will be integrated with the summer camp program.

• Tutu honors Palestinian Christian group Sabeel by lending his name as its international patron

Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu has accepted the role of Patron of Sabeel International to assist the Palestinian Christian organization in its outreach and development work with Christian churches around the world. Based in Jerusalem, Sabeel is an ecumenical effort of the Palestinian churches of the Holy Land following the precepts of liberation theology, a worldwide grassroots spiritual movement that interprets the Bible and Christianity from the perspective of the poor and oppressed. The organization has support groups in North America, the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Australia.

• HCEF to hold a farewell celebration in Detroit in honor of Fr. Alex Kratz, OFM and to discuss the plight of the Holy Land Christians

The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF)* will hold a celebration in honor of Fr. Alex Kratz, OFM, who will soon be departing for the Holy Land. Also present will be Fr. Emil Salayta, Latin priest from the Diocese of Jerusalem, Fr. Majdi al-Siryani, the Director of the Latin School Administration, and Sir Rateb Rabie, KHS, President of HCEF, who will offer an informational presentation on the situation facing the Mother Church in the Holy Land. The event will be held on Saturday, July 12th 2003 from 10:30am-12:30 pm at St. Michael’s Church, 25231 Code Road, Southfield, MI 48034. All are encouraged to attend.

• Toronto Christians Will Gather To Discuss The Plight Of The Holy Land Christians

The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) will make a presentation about the Holy Land Christians at St. Aidan's Church, 3501 Finch Ave East, Toronto, Ontario, CANADA N1W2S2 on Saturday, July 19th, 2003. Sir Rateb Rabie, KHS, President of HCEF, will join Fr. Emil Salayta, HCEF co-founder and Latin Catholic priest from the Diocese of Jerusalem, and Fr. Majdi al-Siryani, the Director of the Latin Patriarchate Administration of Schools, in making the presentation at the church of Rev. Joseph Fenech, pastor of St. Aidan's. They will speak about the current situation in the Holy Land and the ministry of HCEF.

• Christians in Santiago, Chile Offer Solidarity and Strong Support to Palestinian Christians

Santiago, Chile's Christians came together last week to offer their solidarity to Holy Land Christians and to welcome a delegation from the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF). Sir Rateb Rabie, HCEF President; George Ghattas, HCEF Country Representative, Palestine; and Father Khalil Jaar, Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, met with representatives of the Chilean government, the various church authorities in the city, and the local Palestinian community which boasts 350,000 Palestinian Christians (almost three times the number of Palestinian Christians remaining in Palestine!).

• HCEF Concluded an Educational Symposium for 55 Christian Clergy on the Plight of the Palestinian Christians.

The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation sponsored a symposium on the Christians of the Holy Land for clergy of all Christian denominations on May 8, 2003, at the Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church, Washington, DC 20016.

The symposuim speakers informed 55 Christian clergy about the plight of Holy Land Christians and the serious threat to the existence of Christianity in the Holy Land as the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza continues its brutal suppression of Palestinians. George Ghattas, HCEF Palestine Country Representative/ Director of the Program Development Department and Fr. Majdi al-Siryani Legal Advisor, both of the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem, described the horrible living conditions for Palestinian Christians of curfew, siege, checkpoints and unemployment imposed by Israeli military occupation in Bethlehem and Beit Sahour.

• San Antonio HCSN Unites Local Christians in Support of Holy Land Christians

The Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches in San Antonio came together in the Holy Land Christian Support Network (HCSN) to offer an inspiring ecumenical symposium on the plight of Holy Land Christians. On Saturday, April 26, 2003, fifteen different speakers affiliated with the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) painted a picture of life for Christians in the West Bank and Gaza and described several HCEF programs that have proven to be an excellent means of supporting Holy Land Christians both spiritually and materially.

• Important New Additions to the HCEF Boards

The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) is pleased to announce the addition of two new members to the Board of Directors: James Ransom and Father Alex Kratz, OFM. HCEF also welcomes five new members to the Advisory Board: Patriarch Gregorios III, Rev. Dr. Fahed Abu-Akel, Raja Khoury, Rev. Dr. Craig Barnes, and Gabriel Habib.
